A multi-caliber cleaning setup makes it easier to maintain each firearm with the correct bore size.
There is no universal round count that tells every gun owner when to clean. The right interval depends on the firearm's manual, its role, how much it has been fired, the ammunition used, environmental exposure and how it will be stored.
Inspect the firearm after use, follow the manufacturer's interval, and clean sooner after moisture, dirt, heavy fouling or a change in function. A range gun and a daily carry pistol can need different schedules even at the same round count.
Short answer: Let the owner's manual control. Clean after harsh exposure, follow the maker's firing interval, and inspect stored firearms for moisture, corrosion or dried lubricant.
Manufacturer schedules can differ sharply. GLOCK's care guidance advises cleaning after firing, monthly if unused, and after rain, perspiration, salt water, dirt or dust. A Mossberg pump-shotgun owner's manual recommends prompt cleaning after use and a thorough cleaning every 200 shotshells, sooner in harsh conditions. These examples do not apply to every gun.
Build the schedule around the firearm you own. Use round counts and calendar reminders as prompts. The manual's disassembly limit, approved chemicals and lubrication points matter as much as timing.

Keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction and remove all ammunition from the work area. Rain, snow, salt water, perspiration, mud, sand and fine dust can move cleaning ahead of the normal calendar. Unload the firearm, dry it and follow the maker's instructions as soon as practical. Do not return a damp firearm to a case or safe and assume the moisture will disappear.

Visible fouling is one condition signal, but the firearm's manual still determines the correct procedure.
A defensive handgun deserves a conservative schedule because reliability is central to its role. Inspect it regularly for lint, dust, perspiration and corrosion, even when it has not been fired.
